When our motherhood journey is different, it can take a while to connect with another Mama who sees us. But when those connections happen, the magic is instant!
Over a year ago now, when searching for an at-home speech therapist for Nai, I came across Megan’s name in an online Facebook for parents of neurodivergent kids; everyone raved about her heartfelt approach (through Growing Together Speech Therapy, LLC) with kids. From the moment we met, she put Nai, Kes and I at ease; she is kind, caring, compassionate, empathetic, and has a great sense of humor.
Megan is an AMAZING Mama of two, and fierce advocate for her son Henry who has cystic fibrosis and is on the autism spectrum. I could not think of a better Mama to uplift for our first Mama Warrior Spotlight on the blog! I know her words and heart will touch you deeply. We see you showing up, Megan, through the challenges and joys. And we celebrate YOU and your beautiful family!
What is your child’s diagnosis or diagnoses?
Henry is autistic and has cystic fibrosis.
Share your journey with us. What are some of the challenges you all face, and how are you moving through them each day?
Our challenges have ebbed and flowed over the years!
Sometimes we face medical challenges, like a fear of appointments and procedures, and other times our obstacles relate to Henry's executive functioning differences (e.g., attention, working memory, etc.).
As a mom, I strive to better understand and support Henry in an affirming and collaborative manner, while parenting my other son, working, etc. Sometimes, I'm tired! Leaning on family and friends, and finding community, has been essential to moving through each day.
What tools do you tap into for strength and grounding?
Finding pockets of time for myself has always been a challenge, but something I'm trying to practice lately. Even if it's 10-15 minutes, it adds up! I also practice gratitude- on my own and with my family.
What are the joys and gifts of parenting your child?
Both of my children are incredible humans. I admire their friendship and love for one another.
When it comes to Henry, seeing the world through his eyes is beautiful- he slows me down. I can truly appreciate every step he takes and how hard he works to get there. I've never understood or embraced individuality like I do with him!
What are your dreams for your children?
I hope that both of my children will follow their dreams no matter how many obstacles they face, and that they'll always advocate for their wants and needs, and support those that don't have strong voices.
As Henry grows, I hope our world and society becomes more affirming so that they can appreciate Henry's talents and uniqueness. I hope he always loves himself!
What have you learned about yourself as a human being, and Mama along this journey?
I've learned that I am capable of so much more than I ever thought! I've learned that I can survive on little sleep (lol) and lots of love. I've learned that as a mom, my health and well-being is crucial to my kids' development. I've learned that it's okay (and healthy) to ask for help, and that I should never be ashamed for advocating for myself and my kids.
Another Mama is reading your words today, and I would love it if you shared a word of encouragement with her!
See the beauty in your child- every minute, every hour, every day.
Try your hardest to move beyond the "can't" and "won't" mindset- focus on the "can" and "will" mindset. Centering on their interests, passions, and strengths will help you to live in the present, and always push for possibilities.
Megan is currently leading a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. You can learn more about Henry’s journey with cystic fibrosis, and support this worthy cause; the work of the foundation is helping families all over the country!
